Jumping Cholla cactus have these buds on them. I'm not quite sure what purpose they serve, but I suspect that they will later grow thorns and fall to become the Jumping Cactus that are commonly seen in Arizona (See
http://www.pearsonartphoto.com/gallery/8105442_TbWxj/1/531436242_7DpWr for one that is on the ground). They sure do look interesting, whatever they are. I should have probably worked a bit harder to get everything in focus, but oh well.
